Snake Repellent: What Works to Repel Snakes?

October 20th, 2015

Snake

We are no strangers to snakes in Southwest Florida. While we’re used to seeing them out and about, there is absolutely nothing reassuring about seeing a snake around your front or backyard (or even worse, inside your home!).

There are a lot of DIY methods floating around the web for repelling snakes or preventing snakes from getting near your home. However, do they really work? As SWFL wildlife removal experts, we’d like to take the time to share with you some DIY snake repellents as well as a more concrete approach to snake removal.

1. Wormwood (Artemisia)

Artemisia vulgaris, also known as mugwort or wormwood, is supposedly effective in keeping snakes at bay. The only downside of planting this snake repellent plant is that it is an invasive species, so it must be planted away from other plants in the backyard and may not be allowed in some locales.

2. West Indian Lemon Grass

Snakes do not like the smell of citrus from the leaves of this plant. The plant requires very little care and thrives on its own. An added benefit of planting this plant around the house is that it also helps in keeping mosquitoes away from the area.

3. Clove Oil, Cinnamon Oil, and Eugenol

Various research studies have shown that clove oil, cinnamon oil, and eugenol are effective in repelling snakes from a house. Allegedly, snakes will retreat from the area if it is sprayed with these natural ingredients. You can either prepare the solution at home or get a commercial product containing these natural ingredients. Just keep in mind that the solution is not effective when sprayed on hard surfaces.

4. Other DIY Snake Repellents

In addition to the plants and oils above, there are other methods that have been mentioned in repelling snakes from a home:

  • Mothballs
  • Hemp rope
  • Diesel/gasoline
  • Sulfur powder
