Bed bugs are one of the most difficult problems that anyone has to deal with. It is important to get rid of them as soon as possible because they breed at an alarmingly fast rate. One of the best solutions to overcome this problem is to hire a pest control company. They can get the job done professionally, and will take measures that will greatly reduce risk of future infestation. Here are a few things that you should know about bed bugs.

What Are Bed Bugs?

Bed bugs are tiny pests that are mostly found in humid climates. These insects are reddish brown in color and feed on blood. They are usually found in the following places:

  • Baseboards
  • Bed frames
  • Behind loose wallpaper
  • Behind picture frames
  • Cracks in floors
  • Crevices of furniture
  • Mattresses
  • Sofas
  • Under carpets

How Do You Get Bed Bugs?

It has been seen that bed bugs get caught in belongings, and that is how they travel from one place to another. Remember that bed bugs don’t happen due to lack of hygiene and sanitation as they can show up in the cleanest of places. They do not pose any health risks, but tend to cause allergic reactions and red itchy spots on some people.

How to Know That You Have Bed Bugs?

Look for fecal matter and eggs on your furniture to determine their presence.

How Do They Spread?

They can spread due to the following reasons:

  • Commercial laundry machines.
  • Due to food shortage.
  • If the infested furniture is moved.
  • If the same vacuum is used for different rooms.
  • If they are disturbed.

What Steps You Should Take?

Find Out the Infested Rooms. You need to find out which rooms are infested so that you can take some action.

Hire Professionals. Instead of throwing away your bedding and furniture, it is recommended that you hire professionals that will help you out by performing the necessary treatments.

Vacuum and Wash. Vacuum the furniture thoroughly; however, this will only remove the nymphs and adults, but not the eggs. In order to remove the eggs you will have to use insecticides. After you are done vacuuming, double bag the bedding and wash it with hot water. Then discard the bag, and dry the bedding.

Isolate the Affected Furniture. If you feel that a specific piece of furniture is affected, then it is a good idea to isolate it, so that the bed bugs don’t spread.

Use Insecticides Carefully. You will need to apply the insecticides carefully into the hiding place of the bugs. Some of the recommended products include:

  • Diatomaceous earth (DE)
  • Low toxicity contact sprays
  • Pyrethroid sprays

Remember that using insecticides is only a temporary solution and you will need to hire professionals in order to permanently get rid of the problem.
