Coyotes Spotted in Cape Coral: Tips to Protect Your Home

A recent sighting of coyotes has all the residents of Cape Coral on the lookout. Police have issued a warning to residents to adopt strategies to protect their home from coyotes. The news of coyotes in Cape Coral came after a resident reported their small dog missing.
According to the resident, they saw a coyote take their dog into the woods. Therefore, it is pertinent for homeowners to make sure they secure their home to prevent the curious coyotes from coming on their property. Here are some tips to get you started:
Add Fencing to Your Property
For added protection against these invaders, you could add a fence around your property. The fence should be 6 feet high, 1-foot underground, and the vertical facings need to be 4 inches. Most farmers adopt this tactic to prevent hungry coyotes from running away with their livestock. To prevent the coyote from burrowing their way into your property, add barbed wire, placing it at ground level.
Make a Sound
If you are taking out the trash and you see a coyote inching towards you, do not get scared and run away. By running away, the coyote will deem you as its prey. Instead, make a sound by banging two trash lids together. Or you could yell and shout loudly, use air horns, or plastic bottles filled with change to scare the animal away. A tech-savvy approach would be to install alarms and/or lights activated by motion.
Remove Food Sources
You need to make sure you close the lid of your garbage can all the way. If the lid can be easily opened by knocking the garbage can on the floor, invest in a new one. Always clean up after spilled food. If you have fruit trees in your backyard or around your house, remember to pick up any fallen fruit from the ground before it becomes the coyote’s meal. Most importantly, you do not want to feed these animals, as you will only be extending an invitation to them to visit your house more often.
Protect Your Pets
People with pets need to be extra cautious about the presence of coyotes in their area. You need to watch out for them during the day and keep them inside the house during the night. Keep your pet’s food in the house as well. If you have built a fishpond outside your home, remember to cover it at night. If you like to feed birds, clean up any uneaten birdseeds from the ground.
