What are Flying Ants? How to Get Rid of Flying Ants

January 31st, 2016

Ants on a wall

The majority of ants, the ones that we get to see at least, are wingless. However, did you know that there are also flying ants? At certain times of the year, swarms of these flying ants become a very common sight. These ants are also referred to “Swarmers”. Some of the differences between these insects and ordinary ants is that they have elbowed antennae and have waists shrunk around the thorax.

In most cases these, flying ants automatically diminish in numbers once that time of the year has passed without you having to take any special measures. However, if they do not, you may have a serious problem on your hands. The good news is that there are plenty of ways to get rid of them.

Kill Them as You Spot Them

If the flying ants are swarming inside your house or outside it, in limited number, you should waste no time in taking care of them then and there. Simply spray aerosol on them or use a rock to kill them in large numbers in one fell swoop.

Look For the Nests

The best chance of getting rid of all of the flying ants that have infested your house is to start by pinpointing the location of their nest. It is also possible that you may find more than one nest, which is one of the reasons most homeowners cannot understand why their house is still infested by these creepy crawlies after they destroy a swarm.

Using baits are a good idea. Ants are attracted to these; they eat these and then carry bits of them back to their nests. Pay attention and demolish the colonies as you see them.

Every Colony Has an Entry Point

A bit of inspection will help you determine the exact point from where the flying ants are entering your house. It could be cracks, crevices, or open windows. You can also make use of a silicone caulk to completely shut off entry points. Another way to discourage ants from digging their way through the seals entryway is to spread soap water around the area.

Make Sure You Discard Food Waste

One way you can stop flying ants from infesting your abode is to get rid of any waste inside your house. Flying ants feed on this and will keep coming back if they see that you have a habit of leaving them outside uncovered.
