Signs of Termites in Your Home

October 31st, 2019

Having any pest, nuisance wildlife, or insect in your home is not a pleasant experience. One of the most bothersome pests to have in the home are termites.

Termites can infest your home and destroy the structure of your house, and damage or destroy any wood furniture or wooded areas in your home. They cause an estimated $5 billion worth of damage in US. Since they favor damp areas, they can also spread mold in the home.

As you can see, termites can be extremely damaging to have in your home. If you see signs of termites, you should immediate seek a local professional pest control company to get them under control. However, if you’re not sure that you have them, you may not notice them until there is considerable damage. Here are some of the top signs of termites in the home to look out for!

Wood Damage from Termites

One of the obviously tell-tale signs of termites in the home is wood damage.

However, you won’t necessarily see surface damage in your wood that makes it easy to identify. Because of the way they move from the inside, the wood damage from termites will come from the inside out. You may also see mud tubes in the wood from subterranean termites. Look closely for blisters in the wood and pay attention if you notice any wood that sounds hollow when you knock on it.

Other signs in the wood include spots or small opens when they’ve made it through to the outside, tunnels in the wood, to damage under wood floors that may look like water damage or uneven or bubbling paint. As termites eat through the wood, they will leave grooves that can break and reveal a honeycomb interior.

If you notice any kind of suspicious damage in the wood in your home, check for termites immediately.

Swarms & Wings

When you think of termites, the wood termites that crawl through your walls are the first thing that come to mind. However, there are flying termites that have wings.

In the springtime, these termite swarmers come out to mate and form a colony. You may see swarms of flying termites which can often be mistaken for ants or other insects. These termites’ wings fall off after mating, so seeing discarded wings is a sign that you may have an infestation. Look around areas that lead to the outside, like windowsills and doors. Depending on the species, they may swarm after rain, and some are attracted to light.

Termite Droppings (Frass)

An obvious sign of any pest or nuisance wildlife in your home is droppings. The droppings of drywood termites, which nest inside of wood, can often be noticeable. These termite droppings are called “frass” and are wood-colored and look like a small pile of pellets. You may also see small holes in the wood, or dark black marks and powder, which are signs of the termites pushing frass out of the nest.
