Do You Have A Bird Problem?

It’s difficult for us to consider birds as pests, yet they’re considered one of the worst. The majority of us have all seen Alfred Hitchcock’s Movie “The Birds” right—a 1963 masterpiece? “It’s the apocalyptic story of a northern California coastal town filled with an onslaught of seemingly unexplained, arbitrary and chaotic attacks of ordinary birds.” (Film site) Well, before we have a reenactment of the movie Birds, let’s get rid of your bird problem as soon as possible! Possible bird problems in homes here in Southwest Florida are as follows:

  • Birds can nest in chimney’s
  • Birds can nest in attic spaces
  • Birds build their nests in gutters
  • Birds build their homes in vents

Native bird nests, eggs, and babies are protected by law and cannot be moved or destroyed, Starlings and House Sparrows are not protected and you may legally remove them from your home or building. (Audubon)

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, a health risk associated with birds, is the accumulation of bird droppings, feathers and debris under a roost. Among the fungal diseases associated with bird and bat droppings the two most common are histoplasmosis and cryptococcosis.

  • Histoplasmosis
The disease is caused by a fungus, and is transmitted to humans by airborne fungus spores from soil contaminated by bird and bat droppings.
  • Cryptococcosis
The disease is found worldwide. Its main habitats are debris around pigeon roosts and soil contaminated with decaying pigeon or chicken droppings.

When you come across a bird nest, it’s best not to disturb the nest or the birds. Simply wait for a professional that specializes in that area to assess the situation and act accordingly.

These options include bird netting, bird spiking, shock track, visual and audio deterrents, and chemical deterrents. These measures can often be applied for protected species as well, as long as there are no active nests that will be disturbed. Let us know about your problem and we will come inspect to find the most suitable solutions for you.

Once onsite, we provide a thorough inspection to determine the problem animals, optimal trapping techniques, and the best placement of traps. We make it a top priority to relocate the animal to a more suitable habitat as well as bringing any injured animal to a wildlife rehabilitation center for the proper care.
