Are There Squirrels in Your Fort Myers or Naples Attic?

November 24th, 2014

Did you know that squirrels are among the most commonly spotted wildlife in our area? Squirrels are everywhere in Southwest Florida: on the sidewalks, in the trees, in our backyards, and even in our attics. A squirrel is a vital part of our ecosystem and should never be intentionally harmed.

It’s always important to know about the animals in our natural habitat. We recently found an article in National Geographic on squirrels, which we thought would be pretty valuable to share.

It is documented that more than 200 squirrel species live all over the world, which confirms that squirrels are familiar to almost everyone. Tree squirrels are the most commonly recognize and are often seen hanging, climbing, and peeking out from behind the trees. A squirrel’s appetite consists of nuts, acorns, berries, flowers, and much more.

Are Squirrels Becoming a Nuisance?

Squirrels are hardly ever a nuisance until they make themselves at home in your attic—this is when problems arise. If you start hearing suspicious noises coming from your attic, there is a possibility that squirrels (or other animals) have taken up residence in your home.

Attics are well-sheltered areas, creating the perfect home for a new litter of squirrels. Squirrels have four front teeth for a reason: for gnawing! Squirrels will start gnawing your attic insulation, wires, and the exterior of the home. Should you have a squirrel or rather a family of squirrels in your home, it’s best to seek a professional wildlife expert.
